Movement Unfiltered 10

NO TIME.

Well it’s been a long time since I’ve written a post, and with January being pretty hectic with the post Christmas rush, plus having been away on holiday for most of February, the temptation is to say I didn’t have time to get it done.

But did I really not have time?

While away on my road trip I read four really good books, one of them being Mark Manson’s ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’, which I found to be a super entertaining read.

There was one thing in the book that really hit me in lazy bone, a part where he talks about (and I’m paraphrasing here) the next time you’re about to tell yourself you don’t have time for something, try instead saying that it’s not a priority and see how that feels.

In my case it made me feel like an extremely unproductive unit.

So did I have time to get any posts written in the last six weeks?

Of course I did, I just couldn’t be stuffed doing it is the reality.

Occasionally you read or hear advice or tips that just click in the right way for you.  That little piece of self talk from the book is going to be something I use now whenever I hear that inner voice trying to convince me I don’t have time to get stuff done.

TAKING A BREAK.

I’m one of those extremely lucky people who gets to genuinely enjoy going to ‘work’ every day.  It’s a great position to be in, and one I try not to take for granted.

I never really feel like I get to a point where I desperately need to take a holiday, so there was a point where I hadn’t taken a holiday in five years.  I didn’t feel like I was missing out, but in February last year I went on a road trip for a couple of weeks which was really nice, and made me realise what I was missing out on.

I’ve just got back from another road trip, which again was an awesome break.

I still don’t feel like I need to take breaks from work, but it’s something I definitely look forward to now, and I’ll endeavour to do it more regularly.

MOVEMENT CAN’T TAKE A HOLIDAY.

When I went on my trip last year, I did no training whatsoever.  None.

And far out did I feel it!

I guess in my head I wanted to get away from anything related to work.  There was an occasional walk and that was about it.  It wasn’t my brightest idea, but there was a valuable lesson in there that I already knew, and feeling it first hand really brought it home.

Your body is designed to move and do work, and frankly it doesn’t care that you want a holiday.  If you stop using it, you start losing it surprisingly quickly.

My body was absolutely wrecked for ages afterwards, and it took a fair bit of work to get myself moving well again.

To avoid the same problems again this year I just tried to move every day, even if it was only a little bit.

I chucked some kettlebells in the car along with some bands, and just did bits and pieces throughout the trip, plus a couple off visits to some gyms along the way.

Of course I lost some strength and fitness, as I wasn’t doing a full or intense training load, but I feel like I can actually still move this time now that I’m back, so I’m ready to dive straight back into some hard training.

I also came back with slightly more padding than I had when I left, as I definitely treated myself to a fair bit of unhealthy food.  I’ve got a genuine vegetable craving going on now so I’m feeling very keen to get back on track with my nutrition.

I’ll wrap this one up here before it gets ridiculously lengthy.
